‘Being Asian, growing up with certain Asian expectations has created a battle inside me as well. ‘

Marilyn Ng

Marilyn Ng is a Chinese Australian woman who challenges every concept of what that means. She isn’t good at Maths, doesn’t go to Uni, isn’t in IT and isn’t competitive. Instead, she works at a travel agent saving up enough in the world to go snowboarding. India, Japan, Canada and Switzerland, are just some of the countries. It’s her sport, but not competitively, simply passionately. Her competition is with herself and extending her ability and experiences to the extreme, travelling alone to the far reaches of the earth chasing her dreams.

What about when sport is for fun and recreation, not competition? Does it mean that someone is of less value because they don’t complete? Are they no longer a sportsperson?
